Hugely Popular Adele Song To Be Banned Globally

A hugely popular Adele song is to be banned globally.

A Brazilian judge has ordered the hit song be removed from all streaming services globally.

In 2021, composer Toninho Geraes claimed that the artist had plagiarized one of his hits.

Geraes claimed that the 36-year-old used his song ‘Mulheres’ [Women] from his 1995 album – recorded by Martinho da Vila.

His legal team named the song a ‘landmark for Brazilian music’ and Geraes himself said it had ‘often been copied to compose successful international hits’.

The song he was referring to, by Adele, was released on her 2015 album, 25. She sings it alongside a guitar melody, which he claims was plagiarized.

He is asking for a compensation for lost royalties and $160k in moral damages for her song, ‘Million Years Ago’.

Speaking to the BBC, Garaes said: “I think that, if there is justice, I should be compensated for what this song has already generated in dividends. Our desire is for public reparations, but my intention was never to expose Adele.”

On 13 December, Judge Victor Torres issued an injunction in Rio de Janeiro, which requires Sony and Universal – Adele’s labels – to stop ‘immediately and globally, from using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing the song Million Years Ago, by any modality, means, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform’.

‘Per act of non-compliance,’ This also means an $8,000 fine on the Brazilian subsidiaries of Universal and Sony – something they can appeal.
