Artist ‘Ready To Die’ After Letting Spectators Do What They Want To Her For Six Hours

An artist has said she was ‘ready to die’ after letting spectators do whatever they wanted to her for six hours.

Marina Abramović, who famously once put 72 objects on a table and let strangers use them on her body however they wanted, has said she was ready to end it all after her 1974 display.

The range of objects was vast, with things such as flowers and perfume to weapons.

At the beginning of the performance, the audience handed her the flowers or just spectated her as she stool still.

However, by the end of the six hours, her clothes had been removed and her skin had been cut.

At one point, during the performance piece, a fight broke out after a loaded gun was put to her head and her own finger was placed over the trigger.

Despite this extreme performance, she decided that she wanted to continue to create performance art.

During a performance in 2010, something happened that surprised her. During her performance, she sat at a table with an empty chair in front of her in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and anyone could come and sit across from her.

They were instructed not to touch or speak to her but could have a ‘silent conversation’ with the artist.

Many people joined her, including famous actor Alan Rickman.

To sit there silently for two months and not react to anyone is quite the skill. However, one guest surprised her.

Her ex, Frank Uwe Laysiepen (better known as Ulay), joined her at the table.

They had not spoken in more than 20 years and the footage of their silent reunion quickly went viral.

The pair met in 1975 a year after her earlier performance. The pair were together from 1976 to 1988 and the relationship ended in an unusual way.

They split after another performance piece called The Lovers, where they would each walk from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China and be married in the middle.

Sadly, it took them eight years to get the correct permission from the Chinese government, by which point the relationship was rocky.

However, they continued with the performance. Each walking over 3700 miles.

When they met, Ulay told Marina that he had gotten another women pregnant along the route – a translator who had followed him on his travels to her.

She told him he should marry the translator instead and they split up.
