The United States is poised to reclaim the Panama Canal, as stated by President Donald Trump, who warned that “something very powerful is going to happen.”
The president asserted that China has been exerting control over the canal and leveraging it against American interests. He reiterated his determination to either regain control of the canal or negotiate a new agreement upon his arrival at Joint Andrews Airbase after disembarking from Air Force One.
“People are very pleased at this moment. No one expected this to happen. They are now at home, safe with their families. This is a significant development. We are addressing the situation regarding the Panama Canal while Secretary of State Rubio is in Panama. They have committed a grave error. They violated the contract. They are not allowed to do so. The Panama Canal is under Chinese management. It was unreasonably handed over to Panama instead of China. However, they have breached the contract, and we will either annul it or something truly significant will transpire. Concerning other issues, Trump informed the press, “As you know, we had a very busy week.”
During his recent visit to Panama, Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned the leaders that if they did not act swiftly to diminish China’s influence over the canal, the United States would respond. Trump subsequently warned reporters that “something very powerful is going to happen” if the U.S. is not granted control of the canal.
Previously, the president has hinted at the possibility of employing economic and military pressure to compel Panama to relinquish control of the canal.
